Baleage is a recent trend that allows farmers and ranchers more flexibility when trying to maximize their forage. Advantages include increased palatability, shorter harvest windows, increased yield and higher quality forage, just to name a few.
For folks new to making baleage, the question is often asked “What moisture can I bale at?” Surprisingly, the answer is that there’s a wide range. University of Wisconsin, Forage Agronomist, Dr. Dan Undersander says, “We can make baleage at about any moisture content between 25 percent and 70 percent.” The gives producers the flexibility to make baleage when weather becomes a challenge.
