These hay operators tested the new Vermeer 605 S-series balers. Here’s what they said.

When Alex Eddins gets rolling in good hay, he wants to make a bale every 45 seconds. That pace does not leave much room for extra maintenance, plugged pickups or stops to climb out of the tractor.

“The less downtime you have, the more your production can increase. My favorite part is whenever everything is clicking along and you’re just putting out a lot of bales,” Eddins said.

That’s why the baler matters.

Cutbirth Custom Hay Baling puts up between 15,000 and 22,000 bales per season across a 140-mi (225-km) radius near Waco, Texas. Owner Steve Cutbirth runs a three-man crew and handles the cutting himself. Eddings does the baling and most of the maintenance, so the machine behind him has to be simple, durable and ready to run when the hay is ready.

Cutbirth and Eddings used a prototype baler from Vermeer before becoming pilot users of the 605S Rancher baler. They put the machine to work before it hit the market. Here’s what they learned.

What makes Vermeer 605 S-series balers a fit for high-volume hay operations?

Vermeer 605 S-series balers are built for hay producers who need a round baler that can handle long days, high bale counts and tight weather windows. For Cutbirth, that starts with a machine he can count on when the crop is ready.

Cutbirth has been custom baling for 36 years. Over that time, he has run multiple generations of Vermeer balers and served as a pilot user on new machines.

“I used to run a competitor’s balers years ago, and burned one of them down,” Cutbirth said. “On another one, the bearings kept going out. A friend talked me into buying my first Vermeer. They make tight bales and you can’t tear them up. They don’t plug up. They’re just indestructible, and how my baler guy uses them is proof of that. Now, when I go to buy new equipment, I know where I’m going — to my Vermeer dealer.”

When Cutbirth talks about someone who puts balers to the test, he means Eddings.

“I’ve been baling for about six years — I’ve tried other brands, but they just don’t have the same durability,” Eddings said. “With Vermeer, everything seems to work better.”

How do Vermeer 605 S-series balers help reduce maintenance?

Vermeer 605 S-series balers help reduce maintenance by cutting down on daily service points and giving operators a machine with fewer parts to manage. For a custom operation running tens of thousands of bales a year, that matters before the first bale is made.

“The amount of maintenance it requires is a lot less than other balers. There are fewer greaseable fittings. There is just less stuff to go wrong on it. You can get started quicker in the mornings and you don’t have to shut down during the middle of the day to do extra maintenance that you would have to do on other machines,” Eddings said.

Cutbirth sees the same thing in the way the baler is built.

“It’s a very simple baler. It has a lot less moving parts than some of the competitors. The competitors, they got a whole bunch of chains and all this. This ain’t got all that,” Cutbirth said.

How does Atlas Pro help operators adjust baler settings from the tractor seat?

The Atlas Pro™ control system helps operators check key baler information and make adjustments from the tractor seat. That means fewer stops, fewer trips in and out of the tractor and more time focused on the windrow.

“Running the 605S Rancher, the availability to control more of your parameters in the cab without having to get out to change, say, density or net tension — it speeds things up. It just makes for an easier day,” Eddings said.

Across the 605 S-series platform, Atlas Pro system gives operators access to bale shape indicators, moisture information, field tracking, density adjustments, net adjustments and net load controls.

Higher trim levels and optional features add more tools, including Auto-Eject, scales and TempSense™ bearing temperature monitoring.

“There’s more information available right in front of you. You can monitor more things at one time. The least amount of downtime you can have is ideal, because a baler that’s not moving isn’t making money.”

Why does bale density matter for hay producers?

Bale density matters because producers need bales that hold together, store well and make efficient use of every pass through the field. For Cutbirth, productivity still has to end with a bale he is proud to leave behind.

His customers count on him to cut clean, put up good hay and make bales that hold together. That’s why the baler has to do more than run fast. It has to run hard, hold up and make the kind of bale his customers expect.

That is why his trust in the new 605 S-series balers matter. Cutbirth knows what his customers expect, and he knows when a baler can help him deliver it.

“This is my passion,” Cutbirth said. “I’ve got customers and I’ve got to take care of them. I want the field cut clean. I want good hay and good-looking bales. I’m particular about the way the bales look, and the 605S Rancher makes tight bales I’m proud to sell.”
